چکیده

We methodically design and develop a subjective intelligibility testing of Thai speech based on the diagnostic rhyme test (DRT). The Thai DRT (TDRT) consists of 2 test sets, one for initials and the other final consonants. The test for initials is designed to equally compare 21 phonemes pairwise, which results in 210 stimulus pairs. The TDRT for finals compares 8 final phonemes, yielding 84 stimulus pairs. These tests are wellconstructed using real words. TDRT have two main advantages. It allows us to evaluate percent intelligibility responses in each stimulus pair and to systematically compare confusion responses across all phonemes. To test the validity of our method and to further our investigation, we carry out the subjective intelligibility test on twenty eight Thai listeners using TDRT, which varies in 4 SNR levels (6, 12, 18, and 24dB). Average intelligibility scores and confusion matrices for initial and final consonants are analyzed.

A Comparative Study on Perceptual Characteristics of Mandarin Consonants in Different Acoustic Transmission Conditions

In order to compare the effects of different acoustic transmission conditions on Mandarin consonants perception, two subjective speech intelligibility tests were separately carried out in reverberant and noisy condition. The results showed that the affricates and fricatives were the most intelligible in reverberation. Friction might be the most important cue for consonant perception in reverber...

Perceptual Representation of Consonant Sounds in Thai

This work is an attempt to construct a perceptual representation of Thai consonants based on perceptual identification results (from 28 Thais) of 21 phonemes presented in noise. The experiment is designed to equally make pairwise comparisons among 21 word-initial phonemes, which results in 210 real-word stimulus pairs. Percent correct responses and confusion matrices are obtained. Similarity sc...

Assessing the perceptual contributions of vowels and consonants to Mandarin sentence intelligibility.

This study investigated the perceptual contributions of vowels and consonants to Mandarin sentence intelligibility. Mandarin sentences were edited using a noise-replacement paradigm to preserve various amounts of segmental information and presented to normal-hearing listeners to recognize. The vowel-only Mandarin sentences yielded a remarkable 3:1 intelligibility advantage over the consonant-on...

Perceptual contributions to monosyllabic word intelligibility: segmental, lexical, and noise replacement factors.

This study investigated the relative contributions of consonants and vowels to the perceptual intelligibility of monosyllabic consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words. A noise replacement paradigm presented CVCs with only consonants or only vowels preserved. Results demonstrated no difference between overall word accuracy in these conditions; however, different error patterns were observed. A sign...
